These lacing cards are perfect for practicing fine motor skills and hand grip before children are ready to hold a needle. These can be made with an older child or on your own for a little kid.
This project requires no sewing. By purchasing grommets that pop on, you can create reinforced holes to thread through in seconds.
Supplies:
- Stiff felt
- Grommets
- Shoe lace, ribbon, or yarn and a plastic yarn needle
Tools:
- Scissors
- Marker
Once your supplies are all prepared, arrange the grommets on top of your fabric in the shape you would like, then mark your grommet placements with the marker. Because we’ll be cutting out the holes, it does not matter what color or type of marker you use, I’d recommend a washable marker if you are allowing your kid to help you make this.
Cut holes for your grommets per the package directions. If you need to make initial holes and enlarge them when you are actually placing the grommets that is fine.
place your grommets by putting the back half through the felt, pushing the felt down around it, then popping on the top half of the grommet. Repeat for all grommets, and the project is complete!
Your little one can practice their letters and their fine motor skills by threading the needle and yarn through the grommets, if this task is easy for them, consider moving on to an easy sewing project!
